Places to visit
Cathedral of Cusco
This was built between 1560 and 1654; it is already old; it is surely the most monumental and the most beautiful cathedral of Peru, also called the Basilica of the Virgin of Asunción, which together with the temples that flank it, La Sagrada Familia and del Triunfo, make up a set of exceptional architectural beauty. It is worth mentioning that in this same site Kiswarcancha, or the Palace of the Inca Viracocha, was known. Read more
Qoricancha Museum
Whose literal translation would be Golden Enclosure was one of the most important religious centers in the time of the Incas. The chronicles say that upon the arrival of the Spanish, the place was covered with sheets of gold and silver. On the same place, they built the temple from Santo Domingo. Both architectural styles are found in juxtaposition, the European and the Inca, forming an aesthetic without equal whose result exceeds the sum of its parts, harmony, precision, and beauty.
Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Park
It has been called a fortress for a long time because Inca battles against the Spanish took place in this place in defense of the imminent invasion of Cusco, but today it is believed that it could have been a temple offered to the Sun God. It consists of monumental megaliths, some of which are more than 8 m high, perfectly assembled with a padded finish that imposes its presence and also breaks the monotony that a wall would have following a zigzag shape that makes the place cozy. In front of these is a large esplanade where every year is the scene of the Inti Raymi, or Fiesta del Sol, a spectacle worth seeing.
Q’enqo Inka ruins
This Quechua word can be translated as a labyrinth; this place could have been another ceremonial center, taking into account that the Inca civilization was a theocratic state. In the place where we can see carvings in various shapes on the same igneous rock, it is presumed that it could be a place where sacrifices of animal offerings but also humans were made, since you can see raised surfaces in the shape of a table as well as small channels and niches, some in the shape of a funnel.
Pucapucara Inca ruins
A military watchtower that was part of a defensive network in Cusco, it is a walled hill or hill on several levels, with terraces and steps that allow to dominate and visualize a large part of the surrounding terrain, a strategic site for defense, but like not everything time is in danger of war, it also had places for rest, rest, and of course, the sentence.
Tambomachay Inca ruins
Made up of small aqueducts and waterfalls as well as finely carved walls that give it a background and that make the liquid element the great actor of this lithic complex that is thought to have been built for the worship of water, which in an eminently agricultural society played a transcendental role. A network of canals feeds a higher pool, from which water is distributed constantly and uniformly throughout the year.
